2015-16 Theme: Ruins

Ruins: "Physical destruction or collapse; the remains, a dramatic decline, from L. ruere, 'to fall'" (OED)

2015 marks the 70th anniversary of a number of momentous historical events, including the liberation of Auschwitz, the nuclear bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and the start of the Nuremberg Trials. It is also the 100th anniversary of the Armenian genocide, the 40th anniversary of the Khmer Rouge rise to power, and the 150th anniversary of the end of the civil war. All of these events directly relate to genocide and human rights. They are also all related in different ways to CGHR's 2015-16 thematic, “Ruins.”

The 2015-16 "ruins" thematic included, among other activities, a Spring 2015 course on "The Ruins of Genocide," a speaker series, "The Ruins of Mass Violence," and a Fall 2015 international conference on "Reflections in the aftermath of War and Genocide."
