Required Placement Testing

New Transfer students may not be required to take the placement exams here at Rutgers Newark. The following are some guidelines to determine whether or not you may need to test.  

Transfer students generally fall into one of the three categories listed here. 

  1. Students who have transferred from a New Jersey Community College
  2. Students who have transferred from a Four-year institution or a two-year community college outside of the state of NJ
  3. Students from International Schools or Universities

 

1. Students who have transferred from a New Jersey Community College (NJCC)

Check the Math/ English composition course you took at your NJCC before transferring to Rutgers on NJTransfer.

 

Math: If the course is equivalent to 21:640:106-109, 21:640:114, or 21:640:135 you will NOT need to take the placement exam.

PLEASE NOTE: Statistics or math courses below 100 level will not exempt you from math.

English Composition: If the course is equivalent to 21:355:101 or 21:355:102 you will NOT need to take the placement exam.  PLEASE NOTE: writing course below 100 level will not exempt you from testing.

2. Students who have transferred from a four year institution

English Composition courses and math courses must be evaluated by the department in order to be deemed equivalent or not.

 

Math: If your transfer credit evaluation has an equivalency of 21:640:106-109, 21:640:114, or 21:640:135, you will be exempt from testing.

English Composition: If your transfer credit evaluation has an equivalency of 21:355:101 or 21:355:102, you will be exempt from testing.

3. Students from International Schools or Universities

Students who are transfering from internation school are required to test for English and complete Eng 101 and Eng 102 at Rutgers.
