The Program in American Language Studies (PALS) is the English as a Second Language (ESL) program at Rutgers University-Newark. PALS and Rutgers have a long established relationship, working together for over 25 years, providing exceptional English language teaching and assistance to international students and community citizens on the most diverse campus in the United States, Rutgers-Newark. PALS students work towards achieving English proficiency in a communicative setting with a recently renovated language lab, while having most university services available to them, including clubs, associations and activities.
Running six sessions annually, as well as a winter workshop, PALS offers classes in intensive English study, English for Academic Purposes, TOEFL and IELTS test preparation, Accent Awareness, as well as TESOL certification courses. PALS students are encouraged to participate in ESL club activities through field trips in and around New York City, which give them opportunities to practice their English in authentic contexts with expert speakers. Additionally, PALS students can participate in any of the 50 clubs and organizations on campus.
Our instructors come from a variety of ethnic and linguistic backgrounds and either have or are working towards advanced degrees in Applied Linguistics, TESL, English or other related fields.
