Study ESL at PALS Today!

The Program in American Language Studies (PALS) is the English as a Second Language (ESL) program at Rutgers University-Newark. PALS and Rutgers have a long established relationship, working together for over 25 years, providing exceptional English language teaching and assistance to international students and community citizens on the most diverse campus in the United States, Rutgers University-Newark.  PALS students work towards achieving basic communication skills and academic language proficiency in a communicative setting with a recently renovated language lab.

PALS runs six sessions annually. Each session lasts seven weeks with most students studying a total of 18 hours per week/4.5 hours per day for a total of 126 contact hours per session. PALS offers 8 levels of instructions with courses in intensive English study, English for Academic Purposes, and TOEFL test preparation. PALS is also home to an IELTS testing center, offering 1-2 tests per month.
