At the close of each semester, your academic record will be reviewed to verify your grade point average and determine your academic standing.
The Three Levels of Academic Standing Are:
Good Academic Standing
You are considered in good standing if you have met minimum performance criteria - a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.000 or greater, and you are progressing toward a timely completion of the degree requirements. Selected majors require a cumulative GPA greater than 2.000 for graduation.
Academic Probation is a trial period in which you are given a specified amount of time to try to redeem failing grades in order to elevate your grade point average to the acceptable college level of 2.000 (“C” grade) or higher. Improvement in academic grades and sufficient progress towards your degree is needed for continued enrollment in the university. You are placed on probation due to at least one of the following:
You are automatically placed on academic probation when one of the following conditions applies to you:
A cumulative grade-point average of less than 2.000.
Semester (term) grade-point averages of less than 2.000 for two consecutive semesters of enrollment at Rutgers University, full time or part time. Please note, this does not include Summer or Winter sessions.
Failure to complete successfully 60 percent or more of all credits attempted within seven years immediately prior to the time of the academic review, including attempts for which W grades are received
Failure to enroll in a composition course, or preparatory course, as determined by the established placement standards at the college and prior course history, each and every semester until the writing proficiency requirement is satisfied, unless otherwise advised in writing by the Director of the Writing Program or the Office of Academic Services
Failure to enroll in the mathematics course, as prescribed by the placement standards at the college and prior course history, and continue to enroll each and every semester until the mathematics proficiency requirement is satisfied, unless otherwise advised in writing by the Coordinator of Elementary Mathematics or the Office of Academic Services
Failure to complete successfully any course after three attempts, including those for which W grades are received.
Please note: At the discretion of the Scholastic Standing Committee or the Office of Academic Services, a course of action to improve your academic standing also may be specified in an academic contract, which may include a limitation on extracurricular activities and/or the number of credits carried and/or changes in your program of study. Failure to comply with any of the conditions of probation may result in further restrictions on registration or Academic Dismissal.
