Federated Department of History


The history faculty at Rutgers University-Newark and NJIT are joined in a single federated department that offers an integrated curriculum and joint undergraduate and graduate degree programs.

The Federated Department of History offers its students a wide range of excellent resources for the study of history, including:

    * an outstanding faculty with nationally and internationally known scholars and teachers

    * a broad selection of undergraduate and graduate course offerings, with extensive coverage of major historical periods and regions, from the ancient Middle East to contemporary America, Africa, and China, and a unique undergraduate and graduate program in the history of Technology, Environment and Health/Medicine

    * opportunities for original research and writing, with particular emphasis upon the craft of historical writing

    * internships with the New Jersey Historical Society, the Newark Museum, and other local cultural institutions

    * eligibility to participate in teacher certification programs offered by the Education Department at Rutgers University, Newark

    * opportunities to share in the resources and facilities of both institutions, including the extensive library holdings of the Rutgers University system

News & Announcements

  • The graduate students of the Federated Department of History will host their first annual student conference for Rutgers-Newark students on March 28, 2012. The theme for this year's conference is non-specific as long as proposals touch upon a historical topic within the last three hundred years.  A wide range of proposals from students in the humanities within this broad theme are welcome. Students are asked to submit a 250-word abstract by February 15th to gautham.rao@njit.edu.

  • Professor James Goodman is the 2011-12 Hosford Scholar. His lecture,“I Wrote the Story of Abraham and Isaac: A Wayward U.S. Historian Reads (and Writes) Genesis 22," will be presented on Monday, February 20 at 11:30 a.m. in the Dana Room, Dana Library.

  • The 2012 Marion Thompson Wright Lecture on Saturday, February 18 will be exploring health disparities among African Americans, with keynote speaker, Dr. Joycelyn Elders, former Surgeon General of the United States under President Clinton.

  • The Spring 2012 term will begin on January 17, 2012. The spring calendar noting important dates is available through the Office of the Registrar.
