Jose, Ecuador

My name is Jose Antonio Torres. I am from a small city called Loja, located in Ecuador. Before coming to the U.S., I was studying to become a physician. I moved to U.S on October 2009. Since I did not have any prior English preparation, I started to look for ESL programs around the area. Then, I heard from a friend about an interesting program called PALS offered at Rutgers-Newark. I began my studies at PALS around November 2009. I started from High Intermediate and went through TOEFL Preparation Course. I also took English for Academic Purposes, which was offered after finishing with all levels of ESL.

Being at PALS was an enriching and inspirational experience. From my first day of class, I became motivated and wanted to learn more. All the English instructors were very helpful and welcoming. They always used innovative techniques to get me involved in the learning process.  My favorite class was listening and conversation because to me that was the essential piece of learning a new language. Furthermore, the PALS program allowed me to meet a lot of people from different nationalities. Having that intercultural exchange is something that I will always be grateful for.
