Ms. Karen McLane Torian is an assistant director at the Housing Authority of the City of Newark. Her primary responsibility is overseeing the Division of Economic and Community Development of which HOPE VI is a part.

The Authority is the recipient of two HOPE VI grants. The first HOPE VI grant is in the amount of $49,000,000 and entails the construction of 316 units of public housing. The second is teh Stella Wright Homes HOPE IV Revitalization Grant in the amount of $35,000,000 to be used to construct 755 units of mixed income for-sale and rental housing units. These funds must be leveraged to build not only housing but also a community containing two community centers, five parks and a police station at an estimated cost of $200,000,000.

Ms. Torian has been with the Authority for two years. Prior to coming to the Authority, Ms. Torian worked for the New Jersey Housing and Mortgage Finance Agency for twenty-one (21) years. She headed the HMFA's Multifamily Programs Division for over ten years. During that time Ms. Torian was successfully in bringing $100,000,000 in loans to bond issue each of her last two years.

Ms. Torian received her undergraduate degree from Douglass College and her graduate degree from Rutgers, the State University.
