Research Interests

Exploration of the fundamental geochemical processes at mineral-water interfaces that control the solubility and speciation of contaminants such as heavy metals, arsenic and uranium in environmental settings. An important aspect of this work is the application of spectroscopic tools, which provide information on contaminant speciation at the molecular scale. Synchrotron-based techniques such as X-ray absorption spectroscopy and micro-focused X-ray fluorescence, as well as bench-top spectroscopic tools such as attenuated total reflectance Fourier-transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy and luminescence spectroscopy are useful to characterize contaminant retention in a variety of systems. This type of research is motivated by an obvious need to elucidate the complex, multi-variable pathways of trace element and contaminant retention in geochemical systems such as soils and sediments.
