About the Department

The psychology department at Rutgers University – Newark (RU-N) is made up of world-class experts in developmental, perceptual, social psychology, and cognitive neuroscience.  Members of our department engage in research collaborations that cross departments, campuses, institutions, and countries, engaging with and serving the greater Newark area, providing invaluable hands-on lab experience to undergraduates, and fostering student involvement in research.  It is also home to the most popular RU-N major.
The psychology department also offers a Ph.D. in psychology with specializations in developmental psychology, neuroscience, perception/cognition, and social psychology across a variety of research topics. Much of the research conducted in our department currently is supported by grants funded through federal, state, and private sources. Our research is enhanced by the addition of several facilities, such as the new Rutgers-Newark Child Care Center, numerous local collaborating daycare centers and the Rutgers University Brain Imaging Center (RUBIC), which houses a state-of-the-art 3T Siemens TRIO for neuroimaging studies. Our department has numerous collaborations across campus and students also are encouraged to take advantage of training opportunities in the adjacent Center for Molecular and Behavioral Neuroscience, the College of Business (Information Sciences), the School of Criminal Justice, the College of Nursing, the Department of Biological Sciences, the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ), the Institute for Data Science and Learning, and the New Jersey Institute of Technology.
