Series Theme

As modern industrial civilization embarks upon an era of peak oil, we are forced to reflect upon our relationship to natural resources and technology. Oil has literally been the high-octane fuel that has driven globalization, greasing everything from financial markets to industrial agriculture. But global rates of petroleum production will henceforth decline in the face of increasing demands. The looming collapse of this energy supply threatens to precipitate a convergence of worldwide crises, ranging from anthropogenic climate change and resource scarcity, to food shortages, financial meltdowns, and the conflagration of mass violence. This apocalyptic portent has been described by James Howard Kunstler as The Long Emergency. As much it sounds like Doomsday, however, The Long Emergency is actually an opportunity to embrace the literal ancient Greek meaning of "apocalypse," as in the "lifting of the veil" or a "revelation." This is our chance to re-approach resources and technologies in more sustainable ways and to rehabilitate our mental and physical environments for life in the 21st century and beyond. By publicly screening a series of related documentaries and organizing a guest lecture by Kunstler, along with critical responses by Rutgers Faculty members, this series aims to focus attention on these global problems and local solutions linked to oil, technology, and potential collapse.
